Your trip mirrors ours! We have just got back and did almost exactly the same as you.

I would recommend Effendi transfers which we pre booked and was 20 euros from Attaturk to hotel pay driver on day and very modern high quality Mercedes vehicle.

Stayed at the Eurostars Old City hotel which was right in the middle of everything just a few minutes from Bosphorous, walking distance to all major sights and Galatasary Bridge.

We too ate at the Red River pub extremely good food and the cheapest Efes in Istanbul! The other pub across the road, I think called the North Port, charged 25 euros for a Efes and a plain tonic water!

We did the boat trip during the day two hours for 10 euros but the next evening while walking along the front we were offered a night time trip for one hour for 10 Turkish Lira Bargain!

The best shopping we found was not in the Grand Bazzar but at the Egyptian market also known as Spice Market the street around it have superb shops with real bargains.

The only downside we found was the fact that you are hassled from the moment you step out of your hotel until you return it gets really annoying, imagine the Didim market on Saturday and times it by 100.

We would recommend the Eurostars hotel it was very smart, very clean fabulous location really helpful friendly staff very good buffet breakfast.

At the ground floor street level is a very large Turkish delight and Baklava shop and they put out free samples which meant we came back about a stone heavier than we arrived!
